(Author's Note: the contents of this page previously appeared as her reaction on Leah's Treasures: Guest Post: Chivalry. Because it's quite long, she thinks it's as good as a blog post. ((: )
I think chivalry should not be expected solely from men.. When I ride the bus and I see an old lady or old guy or a pregnant lady or a crippled guy or a child standing, either i share or offer my seat to them. The point is if you are more physically able than the person next to you, then you are expected to assist him/ her. I don't need to be a guy. Knights don't need to have a 'rod' to be called a knight.
Okay, I wouldn't deny that I get flattered when a guy gives me special treatment.
If my date pays the bill then I won't stop him because that's what he wants to do. Not worth hurting him or his pride, but I think he shouldn't feel that way-- that he is supposed to be the one to pay for everything just because he is male.
If a guy does give up his seat for me, then I would gladly take it, not because I think I deserve it more than he does, but because I don't want to hurt his feelings. What I'm trying to point out is the guy don't have to do it, he DOESN'T HAVE TO FEEL GUILTY when he sees an EQUALLY ABLE WOMAN standing while he is comfortably sitting. I mean, why did the woman even board the bus knowing she'd end up standing? Better wait for the next bus.
GUYS, JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE GUYS, SHOULD NOT BE EXPECTED TO ACT AS THOUGH THEY ARE THE HIGHER SEX. AS THOUGH THEY ARE STRONGER. AS THOUGH THEY ARE MORE CAPABLE.
I consider chivalry as a form of STEREOTYPING. I am a very independent young woman and when I say EQUALITY, I mean it. No slight equality or part-equality. No 'we split the bill in half but it would make me feel good if you pay it all by yourself.'
The suffragettes of the 1900's, who fought for their right to vote, I think, played a big role in starting the domino of movements empowering women to be treated by men as equals.
MEN AND WOMEN ARE EQUAL. WOMEN ARE NOT THE LOWER SEX. ABLE WOMEN ARE AS MUCH AS ABLE AS MEN.
If women think that they should be treated as royalties, then men should also get their fair share.. After all, it would be lonely to be queen, without a king..

Whoa! A reaction! Yay!! hehehe.. ang galing. Thanks for not forgetting to put a backlink, Karen.. :)
That guest post's specific target was men. hehe. Just like the "virginity" post, which had women as its target audience.
Siguro, my guest blogger's point is that.. with the number of independent women nowadays, men are put in very tricky situations.. Some women despise (?).. rephrase, such a strong word.. don't like being treated like helpless damsels, so some men (not all) hesitate before making a move.. offering a seat, opening a door..
However, "pogipoints" yun.. especially if the woman likes the gesture. Like me.. I love doing things on my own. If I can, then I will. But I don't mind chivalrous acts from men. And accepting those acts doesn't mean that I accept the "MEN are the higher sex" bit. :) I only appreciate them.. :D
To each his own. :)
You obviously is a very very independent woman, Karen. Sulong! hehe.. :)
do u really believe equality exists in this world? don't u think na yung MEN AND WOMEN ARE EQUAL thing actually means nothing but a cliche?
whenever i see pregnant women or the likes on public transports, i don't actually give them my seats. why? because i don't care. why would i? call me what you want. but im not a misogynist. ;)
Well said, Kayren! :) It was interesting to read this.
@leah: oo naman.. hehe. i got nothing to post kci ee..
and this post targets men and women alike.(;
hmm, right, we have our own views. it just really irks me when women express their disgust over guys who don't act chivalrous. hehe..(;
oh screw the women-and-men-are-equal shit! this is the secret: ive always wanted to have the upperhand on men! harhar kiddin'
@kabute: what i said, and insist, is that men and women are equal. and the reason its still considered cliché, and not as a hard fact, is because until now, popes are always male and so are most legislators.
that's okhey, what i said sa post, you are expected, not required, to assist a less able person. entirely up to you to not care (;
but what if a pregnant lady is right in front of you and suddenly she manifests the signs of an impending labor? would you just let her be and walk away? thats callous hehe
@the blogwriter: thanks so much!
i'd probably help if that's the case. there's a difference between being kind and being chivalrous. ;)
glad you said that ahaha. akala ko cold-hearted ka lang talaga lol kiddin'
do u think i am? haha. =)
judging by your true-to-life posts, i don't think warm blood can't stay warm when it passes through the chambers of a cold heart. lels
then maybe i'm like lestat. just maybe. ;)
why, is your hair blond like his? ahehe
funny. you really are sensual (meaning may sense.. like good sense) hahaha. natatawa naman ako.
and so im making ur blog a public chatroom again. ;)
